What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Lost Tooth
When a tooth falls out, we may still be able to salvage it. The first thing you should do is try to find the tooth. If you can’t find it within 30 minutes, just proceed to your dentist as soon as possible. If you do find the tooth, you need to take a few steps to preserve it before coming in.
First, pick the tooth up by its chewing surface or crown. Do not touch the root. Then, you should gently rinse the tooth in clean water. Do not scrub, damage, or remove any gum tissue that is attached to the root as it is very delicate and could be helpful in the healing process.
Once the tooth is clean, try to reposition your tooth in its socket. If the tooth stays in its socket, proceed to the dentist. If not, do not try to force it. Instead, keep the tooth moist, preferably in a container of milk.
Broken Tooth
Firstly, try to find the portion of the tooth that has broken off, rinse it in clean water, and store it in a container of milk until you reach the dentist. If the tooth is causing you pain, you may take over-the-counter pain medication. You should rinse your mouth with salt water to prevent infection from setting in before you reach the dentist.
If your broken tooth is jagged or sharp inside your mouth, you can place a small piece of sugarless chewing gum over it to protect your mouth and prevent any cuts. Then, proceed to your dentist as soon as possible.
Lost Crown or Filling
Although a lost crown or filling is not typically considered an emergency, it can lead to dental pain or sensitivity and should be dealt with sooner rather than later. A tooth that has been crowned or filled will not be as strong without the crown or filling.
Simply place the crown or filling in a clean and safe place, then bring it with you when you are able to see the dentist.
