Your jaw joint, called the temporomandibular joint or TMJ, is one of the most complicated joints in the entire human body. It is also no coincidence that this joint can cause significant pain for many patients. Method Dental offers a variety of therapeutic treatments and exercises to alleviate pain that stems from the TMJ.
TMD or temporomandibular joint disorder is a term used to describe pain and discomfort due to issues with the TMJ. Temporomandibular joint disorders are often triggered by stress, as habits like clenching, grinding, or tensing the jaw can wear on the joint and cause fatigue.
TMD can also develop as a result of an injury to the joint or surrounding muscles, joint diseases like arthritis, or dislocation of the articular disc.
The symptoms of TMD may include:
There are a variety of treatments that may be effective in reducing pain associated with the TMJ. A combination of anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants as prescribed by a dentist with warm and cool compresses and jaw rest may help alleviate your symptoms.
There are other, more drastic treatments we may be able to provide as well if these do not prove effective. Our dentist will work with you to understand your symptoms, find the source of your TMD, and identify the most effective treatment for your needs.
