Veneers Provide the Appearance of Straighter, Whiter Teeth

While you may wish to alter the appearance of your teeth, dental implants, orthodontics, and several other services may be outside your price range. Veneers allow you to alter the apparent colour, alignment, shape, and size of your teeth in a single service rather than several more costly services.

Book an appointment to find out if veneers are an option for you.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are thin shell-like objects that have been custom-made to cover the front of your teeth. These shells allow your teeth to appear different without necessarily realigning, brightening, or significantly resizing your natural teeth. Patients choose to have veneers for a number of reasons, including alignment issues like gaps between the teeth, shape issues like chipped teeth, and permanent dental stains due to diet or smoking.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

With the proper care and maintenance, a pair of porcelain veneers can last 10 years or longer. It is, however, important to note that veneers are more susceptible to cracks and chips than your natural teeth. You will most likely have to have your veneers replaced at some point. Porcelain veneers also cannot be reversed, as your teeth need to be reshaped before installation.

Types of Veneers

Porcelain

Porcelain is the most popular material for veneers because it has a similar look, feel, and durability to natural teeth.

The process of getting porcelain veneers starts in your dentist’s office. The doctor will need to reshape the teeth that are being veneered to make space for the porcelain. Once your teeth have been filed down, the dentist will take an impression of your newly-reshaped teeth. This impression will serve as a template for the laboratory to use when constructing your veneers.

It will take some times for your veneers to be created. In the meantime, your dentist will give you temporary veneers to cover the current shape of your teeth and protect them from sensitivity. Once your customized veneers are complete, you will return to the dentist office to have them applied. Your veneers will be cemented to your teeth with a resin-based cement.

While porcelain veneers require two appointments, composite veneers can be completed in one. Rather than taking an impression of your teeth and having your custom veneers created in a laboratory, composite veneers are built directly onto your natural teeth.

The dentist will apply a tooth-coloured composite resin directly to the tooth. This resin is still in a sort of gel form, which allows the dentist to sculpt it on your tooth for the desired look. Once the resin is formed into the size and shape you want, the dentist will cure it with a special light.

Although composite veneers are not as strong and may not last as long as porcelain veneers, they do tend to be less expensive and can be reversed as they don’t require the natural teeth to be reshaped before application.
